MS IOT Quick Facts

Overview

The Master of Science in Internet of Things (IoT) enables graduates in computing and related areas to pursue a graduate degree in a technology-driven discipline. In this fast-growing area, the M.S. in IoT degree provides a sought-after set of technical skills to build on an ecosystem of hardware, software and services that turn data into intelligence. With IoT devices as a part of everyday existence and given their rapidly increasing deployment by leading corporations, it will be an IoT world.

Graduates of the M.S. in IoT program will gain the knowledge and capabilities to position themselves in this rapidly growing and expanding field with increasing employment opportunities and higher earning potential. Career opportunities include employment as entrepreneurs and/or in the areas of the ever-evolving tech industry, including smart homes, smart grid, smart transportation and smart medical devices. The program focuses on research and device/product development to fill the estimated over 300K available job opportunities with an average U.S. salary of over 100K.*

*Average Annual U.S. Salary 107k | *Estimated 316,400 new jobs: Source

IoT program graduates will be prepared to:

  • conduct research on the fundamental underlining concepts associated with IoT technology (Software, Hardware, Communications, and Security).
  • select, install, customize, and maintain state-of-the-art IoT devices and networks.
  • perform data analytics, machine learning, deep learning, and big data.
  • utilize and understand contemporary IoT applications and protocols commonplace to the industry.
  • explain the legal and ethical implications of their work and an awareness of the impact of their actions and decision-making on individuals, society, and the environment.

Internet of Things  (IoT)  devices have become part of our lives. As they are increasingly deployed in various domains such as smart cities, health, agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, automotive, retails, etc., they are now readily accessible to the end-users who need to manage them on a daily basis. Therefore, there is a growing need to educate and train a new workforce with advanced knowledge on various aspects of IoT. FIU’s new MS program on IoT will provide this needed training while also keeping up to date with the new developments in this emerging area.

STEP 2 – Application Requirements

Please submit the following items with your online application, via email, or mail to the address below after completion of the online application.

  • A 4-year Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a closely related field such as business administration from an accredited university with a minimum of “B” average in the upper-level (the last 60 credit hours). The applicant whose GPA does not meet the minimum GPA requirement may be considered for conditional admission.
  • Official transcript of each previously attended university (undergraduate and graduate) in an envelope sealed by the degree granting institution.

     International Students:

  • If an official transcript is not in English, the applicant must obtain two sets of transcripts: one to be submitted to FIU in the original language and the other to be translated by an official translation agency (or certified translator).
  • Official proof of degree: a notarized copy of the original diploma is required if the degree is granted from a foreign institution not posted on the official transcripts.
  • International applicants whose native language is not English are required to demonstrate English language proficiency through one of the following:
  • 80 on the iBT TOEFL (equivalent to 550 on the paper-based version of the Test of English as a Foreign Language);
    • 6.5 overall on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS); • 53 Pearson Test of English – Academic;
    • Cambridge English – Advanced;
    • 110 Duolingo English Test – Combined
    • English Language Institute certification of satisfactory completion of all content areas with at least level six (6) proficiency;
    • Applicants who hold an undergraduate or graduate degree from an accredited institution where the language of instruction is English.
  • (optional) Statement of purpose: A well-written statement describing your professional goals and reasons for pursuing the MS in IoT degree at Florida International University. (May be submitted via email.)
  • (optional) Resume: A current resume is required, which may include education, professional training, internship, and employment history (full time and part-time employment). (May be submitted via email.)
  • (optional) Three letters of recommendation from employers, faculty, or professional associates. (May be submitted via email.)

STEM Designation

The Master of Science in Internet of Things (IoT) is a STEM-designated program. After program completion, international students have the opportunity of Optional Practical Training (OPT), which allows students to work within the U.S. for a specified period of time – currently up to 24 months for STEM designated programs. Please refer to the Office of International Student & Scholar Services for further information.

Schedule

The MS in IoT program is taught during regular, 15-week semesters, and courses are offered in a hybrid model. The program can be completed in one year if the student follows the full-time schedule.

Hybrid classes have both in-person, classroom sessions on campus and out-of-classroom learning experiences. Hybrid classes will have a set schedule for the days and times the in-person classes meet. The breakdown is about a third to two-thirds of the in-person classroom sessions, and the rest of the out-of-classroom experiences may be completed through Canvas, other online resources, or with experiential learning at off-campus sites.

Tuition

The total cost of the Master of Science in the Internet of Things program is currently $17,142.25 plus semester fees (approximately $20,000). Tuition will be calculated each semester based on the number of courses enrolled. Students must pay for courses at the beginning of each semester, and may select to complete their payments in one lump sum or via a payment plan.
